Is 1000 Hair Grafts Enough for You to Look Your Best?

February 26, 2021

If you have done your research into the cost of hair transplants, then you know the majority of hair clinics will charge you for each and every graft that needs to be transplanted. It is for this reason that it is virtually impossible to get a quote for a hair transplant from just an email or a phone call. The hair clinic doctor generally needs to do a thorough examination to determine how much it’s going to cost you for the total hair transplant procedure. A lot of hair clinics will charge a certain amount for up to 1000 grafts, then the price per graft goes up.

So, you have to ask yourself, is 1000 hair grafts enough for you to look your very best? Well, that question is more difficult to answer than you would think. There are a lot of factors that go into figuring out how many hair grafts you will need to create the appearance of a full head of hair. If 1000 hair grafts are enough to just cover the bald spot on your scalp, then great! You will probably save a good deal of money in the long run.

Sometimes at first glance, you would assume that you might not even need that many grafts to fill in your thinning hair. Or perhaps you might have a giant bald spot and you may think you will need three times that many grafts to do the trick. Well, this topic is more complex than you would think because there are different kinds of what we call “grafts.” Also, the thickness of your particular hair follicles will also determine the appearance of the hair when it takes root.

Hair Grafts Then & Now

From about 1970 to about 1993 or so, doctors used a 4mm hair follicles punch graft. This punch graft would generally remove a cylindrical-shaped portion of skin with hair on it from the donor area. The punched-out skin would generally have about 12 to 30 hairs on it. Back then the surgeon would then use the same instrument and punch out a hole of skin where they would implant the cylindrical portion of skin. (RC).

Now, hair graft extractions a delicately performed. Even with the FUT hair transplant where whole strips of hair-bearing tissue is extracted at a time, the grafts are separated into groups of 1,2,3 or even 4 hair follicles prior to implantation. Separating the hair follicle grafts into lesser numbers of hair follies makes the result of them being implanted look more natural and less like hair plugs.

How Many Hair Grafts Can a Surgeon Implant in One Session?

Around 4,000 hair grafts can be transplanted in one session if the surgeon is using the FUT technique. The high number of grafts for the FUT transplant is due to how the hair follicles are harvested from the donor area. The FUE hair transplant technique harvests hair follicles nearly individually or in groups of 2 or 3. Therefore, the grafting process takes a great deal longer than the FUT method. Using the FUE technique, only around 2,000 hair grafts can be implanted due to the longer harvesting process.

The Factors That Determine How Many Hair Grafts you Need

No two hair transplant procedures are the same. There are several factors that come into play when you are asking yourself if only 1000 hair grafts will be enough to give your hair a thick and full look. Mostly the number of grafts will depend on the size of the bald or balding area where the hair transplant will take place. If 90% of your scalp is bald, then you will need more hair grafts than if you only have a small bald spot on your crown.

Hair loss is a progressive process. Unless you are ill or undergoing chemotherapy, your hair loss will be a very gradual situation that progresses over time. If you decide to take action the very first time you notice the hair loss, then you may need only a few hundred grafts to get the look you are after. However, if you wait until you are going through a tube of sunblock a week just to keep the sun off your scalp, then the number of hair grafts you will need will be much greater.

Another factor that will greatly affect the number of grafts you will need is the quality of the hair on the donor area. If you have only thin and unhealthy hair at the only donor area available for extraction, then you will need a lot more grafts than if the donor hair is thick and healthy.
