The Average Hair Transplant Success Rate

What’s the average hair transplant success rate? That’s a question we hear constantly. And it’s no wonder. Hair transplantation is a big expense and requires a lot of time and patience to see results. So it stands to reason that when people are ready to drop tens of thousands of dollars on a procedure, they want to make sure they’ll see real results. And for the vast majority of nations, they will. The hair transplant success rate of FUT and FUE procedures is determined by several factors. Age. Heredity. Environment. Diet. Stress. Onset. Previous attempts to keep hair loss at bay. You get the idea. In this article, we will delve into the factors that contribute to the success of hair transplantation surgery.

Hair transplants are an effective way to restore the appearance of thinning hair. It is important to note though, that not everyone will be a good candidate for hair transplantation. These types of surgeries are mainly used to restore balding or thinning hair or to restore hair that was lost due to an injury. Furthermore, it is best to get a hair transplant earlier than later for most patients, because if hair loss is too far gone, you won’t have enough donor hairs to transplant. And if you’ve waited that long, you may be out of luck. Even if you aren’t financially or emotionally ready for a hair transplant today, it can’t hurt to get a consultation first. At least then you’ll know where you stand.

Understanding Hair Transplants

Transplants are usually conducted using your own hair, so these procedures are not effective in treating people who struggle with widespread thinning or balding, hair loss due to chemotherapy or medication, to cover scalp scars from injuries. Bariatric patients or others who have experienced hair loss due to surgery usually won’t need hair transplants. In most cases, your hair will grow back naturally. Unless of course, you are already suffering from thinning hair. If you are determined to be a good candidate, hair transplants have a higher success rate than over-the-counter hair restoration products.

So what do the typical results of a hair transplant look like? Naturally, success can vary greatly depending on the skill and experience levels of the surgeon. Reputed doctors are able to achieve rates close to 100 percent. This is best accomplished when the surgeon and patient have a well-organized plan for the recovery period, based on the patient’s lifestyle. The early weeks following treatment are a crucial time for the newly transplanted follicle grafts to become well established.

Types of Hair Transplants

There are two main types of hair transplants: FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) and FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction). FUT is performed by removing a piece of the scalp, usually from the back of the head, in order to harvest follicular units. The area where the grafts were removed is sutured.

With FUE the surgeon uses a small tool to remove the donor follicles individually. They are still removed from the back of the head, but instead of in being removed in one continuous strip, they are removed in a dispersed pattern. This procedure is less likely to result in visible scarring. It’s often preferred for being less invasive and having a shorter recovery period. This procedure is a favorite of men, as they enjoy wearing shorter hairstyles. Conversely, women sometimes prefer FUT procedures, as a scar will not be visible with longer hairstyles. It all depends on what your doctor feels is best for you.

Both procedures are performed under local anesthesia, so you will be awake during the treatment. Patients are able to go home the same day as surgery. With both types of surgery, the same method is used to transplant the harvested grafts into thinning and balding areas. Both of these techniques are effective, but in some cases can produce different results.

Measuring the Average Hair Transplant Success Rate

The parameters that are the best predictors of a hair transplant surgery’s success include the skills of the surgeon, clinical infrastructure, tools used, and the patient’s efforts at appropriate aftercare following surgery. Even if your surgeon is a master and performs a flawless FUT or FUE successfully, if you don’t follow the proper aftercare instructions, as advised by your doctor, your transplanted hair may fail.

It is crucial to follow the after-surgery instructions to the letter. In order for your surgery to be a success, the newly transplanted grafts must survive and adapt to the new areas where they have been placed. Some patients worry that the body will reject the new grafts. However, hair follicles are harvested from your own body and are not rejected as a new limb might be. In fact, clinical studies have shown that between 85-95% of all implanted grafts establish themselves easily in the transplanted area. This is an indication that hair transplant procedures are largely successful.

Hair transplantation for facial hair such as eyebrows and facial hair can prove to be a little more challenging. This is because these areas have less blood supply when compared to the skin on the scalp. In some cases, you may be required to undergo more than one hair transplant procedure in order to reach your desired level of fullness. A lot will depend on your current state of hair loss. However, this is not uncommon. In fact, many patients require at least two hair transplants. Some may benefit from both FUE and FUT combined. Each person is different so always consult your hair transplant surgeon.

The Average Hair Transplant Success Rate in Very High

FUT and FUE procedures both have a success rate of anywhere between 95%-100%. You’ll see great results as long as you follow proper aftercare instructions. The recovery period lasts for at least two weeks. During this time avoid activities like exercise, hair cuts, or wearing wigs or hats. You can traumatize the transplants. Additionally, avoid anything that could cause irritation or infection at either the donor or transplant sites. These include sweating, swimming, the use of hair care products, or wearing hats, helmets, or wigs. Any infection could not only cause the new grafts to fail but in extreme cases can lead to necrosis of the scalp.

After the initial healing process it is normal to experience a phenomenon known as “shock loss” approximately 4 months post-surgery. This is a natural part of the life cycle of the hair follicle. The old hair is falling out to make way for the new growth. Within a year the new growth will be noticeable and well established. Ultimately, be patient, just like you would with any other surgical procedure. This is a real, long-term solution to your hair loss. But it takes time to see results. However, being that the average hair transplant success rate is extremely high, you’ll be glad you did.
