So you’re getting a hair transplant. Excited?! Maybe excited mixed with nervous? That’s OK. If you’ve never had a hair transplant, it can seem a bit daunting at first. Recovery will go by faster than you know it, but it’s still an important time for proper healing. Let’s go over what you can expect 1 week post op.
FUT & FUE 1 Week Post Op
First off, there are two main types of hair transplant: FUE and FUT. Follicular Unit Transplantation has almost twice the recovery time of a Follicular Unit Extraction because FUT procedures remove a strip of hair from your head. This thin strip of flesh takes longer to heal. Most FUE transplants require only an initial week of recovery, while a FUT will likely require two weeks.
If you elected for an FUT procedure, 1 week post op should have you at a place where your grafts have taken to your scalp and can’t be as easily dislodged. You may still have some scabbing, but you can likely wash the area more thoroughly – though you should double check with your doctor first. You should expect to use moisturizing lotion or even a mild topical steroid.
If you went with an FUE procedure, any redness or swelling should be on its way out, if not completely disappeared. Expect to experience crusting near the harvested area of your head. Check with your doc first, but you should be able to wash your head more vigorously 1 week post op. As with FUT recovery, you may notice some itching or tingling, and some kind of moisturizer may be recommended to help with this.
Keep Vigilant & Stay Smart
In either case, you’ll want to avoid getting your head dirty. Like, don’t sub in for your clown friend to get pied in the face at any carnivals. And don’t go on any Nickelodeon game shows. We know it’s tempting, but that green ooze and cream filling pose serious risks of infection.
You may be allowed to resume physical activities like working out 1 week post op, but sometimes you must wait two weeks or longer, so check with your doc. Don’t go swimming in any chlorinated water for this first week or so, either. Your crusts will start falling off 1 week post op, and may take a bit longer for all of them to come off. Any sutures you may have will probably stay on for another week.
Be Gentle 1 Week Post Op
Don’t expect to be rockin’ a full mane of hair only 1 week post op. Your implants will be more firmly in place, but you won’t be able to style or cut your hair for a while. Your surgeon will let you know when. For more specific details on what you can expect, you need to talk to your surgeon, someone with expertise and who’s familiar with your particular case.
