So Many Choices Hair Restoration Choices for LA Hair Transplant Patients

Los Angeles California one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world. You can pretty much find anything you want to buy in LA without even having to look very hard. Anything you want to do, for that matter as well. Most longtime LA residents are used to all the lights, fame, and fortune. They’re one of the highlights that make LA what it is. However, it can be a bit overwhelming for any LA hair transplant patients looking to get their hair restoration procedure done at one of the best spots in the country.

If you’re one of the many LA hair transplant patients that have made the trip in from another area, then the sheer number of hair transplant clinics here can be too much to decide from. On top of all the different hair restoration methods like FUE, FUT, PRP, and LLLT, it can just about confuse anybody. Here at Best Hair Transplant Los Angeles, we make being a new LA hair transplant patient easy for you. We know there’s a lot to consider, especially if you’re coming in from out of town. Trust us when we say LA is one of the best places in the country to get your hair transplant.

How to Decide if You Need a Hair Transplant Surgery

The first step in the process sounds pretty obvious. Deciding if a hair transplant is even the right hair restoration solution for your situation. Simple right? Well, maybe. Maybe not.

Getting a hair transplant is just like any other minor surgery. There is a lot you must do to prepare for the procedure and the post-op discomfort is not something most folks look forward to. You can just up and decide you are ready to become a LA hair transplant patient now and jump right in or maybe spending some time researching other hair restoration options may be the best thing for you.

Drugs like Rogaine and Propecia will likely slow the progression of hair loss. Studies prove this time and again. However, there hasn’t been a lot of proof that they are great at regrowing hair. If you are just in the beginning stages of hair loss, then using these drugs may just be the best option for you. If you can slow or even stop the hair loss now, then it might not be in your best interest to undergo an invasive hair transplant surgery. And at Best Hair Transplant in Los Angeles, we’ll happily tell you if that’s the case. However, if your hair loss is far gone (which is often so when we see adults in their later 20s and 30s), then an FUE hair transplant or FUT hair transplant may be just what the doctor ordered (literally).

The Best Ways for LA Hair Transplant Patients to Determine Their Needs

The best way to decide if your hair loss progression is advanced enough is to make that appointment with a hair restoration surgeon. They’ll compare your hair loss progression to the Norwood Scale. Also known as the Hamilton-Norwood scale, the Norwood scale is the most common rating doctors use to evaluate and discuss the progression of normal pattern baldness. There are other scales for different types of hair loss as well as female pattern baldness, but we won’t get into those today.

Get Acquainted with the Norwood Hair Scale

There are 7 stages of baldness according to the Norwood Scale. Stage one is when there is no noticeable hair loss or recession of the hairline. At Norwood stage 2 there is a slight but noticeable recession of hair around the temples. We call this an “adult” or “mature” hairline.

Norwood scale stage 3 is normally when folks will start looking into hair transplant surgery. Stage 3 is when clinical signs of baldness appear. The hairline becomes deeply recessed at both temples, with little or no hair still in the recessed areas. The hairline then starts to resemble either an M, U, or V shape due to the hair recession.  After stage 3, the Norwood scale progression of hair loss continues with stage 4 involving a severely recessed hairline with little to no hair at the top of the head, and with stage 5 progressing to the point where only a band of hair separates the bald spots at the hairlines and the top of the scalp.

Norwood scale stage 6 is when the balding areas of the top of the head join with the balding areas at the temples. The final Norwood scale stage is 7, which involves being completely bald, outside of a thin band of hair around the base of your skull.

The Next Steps

Generally, any progression of hair loss that is past a Norwood scale 1 would be eligible for a hair transplant surgery, and here at Best Hair, we have had many scale 2 LA hair transplant patients. Most people who have progressed to a Norwood scale 3 or farther are the individuals who seek out surgery. If you are at a Norwood scale 1 or even two, other hair restoration methods may be right for you. However, if you do decide to get hair transplant surgery, the next step is to decide which kind of procedure you want to get.

How to Decide What Kind of Hair Transplant is Right for You

The two methods of hair transplants that we offer here are Best Hair Transplant Los Angeles is the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and the Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) procedures. We use top-of-the-line equipment for both methods of transplant so that you will only be getting the best regardless of what kind of surgery you choose. Both the FUE & FUT produce good overall results upon healing. The major difference between the two methods is how the hair follicles are extracted from the specified donor area of the scalp.

Follicular Unit Transplants & Follicular Unit Extractions

With the FUT technique, the doctor will extract a whole “strip” of hair-bearing tissue from the donor area. Then the doctor will carefully dissect the individual hair follicles down from the strip for processing and implantation into the area affected by the hair loss. The FUE method involves the surgeon extracting the individual hair follicles from the donor area instead of whole “strips.” The implantation of the hair follicles is similar with both the FUE and FUT methods.

The FUT technique takes a lot less time to complete, due to the quicker harvesting phase. However, there is more post-procedure discomfort and pain that comes along with the FUT method. FUT patients will also be left with a linear scar that runs along the donor area, which is generally in the back of the head, along the base of the skull. A skilled surgeon will have no problem coving this up. The FUE method takes longer to complete but is known to be much more precise. There is less post-procedure pain with FUE, and the scarring normally involves small “pin-prick” scars scattered around the donor area, instead of one large strip.

Deciding which procedure is right for you depends on how advanced your hair loss has become and your personal preference. If you’re on the shady side of a Norwood Stage 5, a FUT transplant may be a better option. This is due to the sheer number of hair grafts needed for transplant coverage. If your hair loss had advanced to stage 5 or 6, an FUE procedure would take a tremendous amount of time to complete. This may be broken up into two sessions for those who need a large number of grafts. On the other hand, if you progressed into stage 3, then perhaps an FUE transplant will be best. After all, you’ll have less pain post-procedure.
