When asking a simple question like: “how much do hair transplants cost in LA?” sometimes the answer isn’t quite so simple. Asking a question like, “how much do six-burner gas grills cost in LA?” would generally be much easier to answer. One can simply do a Google search or two and come up with a quick and easy answer. Hair transplants are an entirely different creature when it comes to pricing.
Clinics will sometimes charge per graft; however, some patients require two to three times the time to implant a single graft than other patients. Therefore, when a clinic charges per graft and one procedure transplanting the same number of grafts as another, takes three times a long, then simplistic pricing models become tougher to quote on a generic basis.
It’s Tough to Get a Straight Answer on Hair Transpant Costs
Well, that’s the $1,000,000 question. And it’s harder to unearth than you might think. 99 out of 100 hair transplant clinics will not just give you a flat rate of what they charge per graft. And that includes on their websites or through email. Believe us… we tried! We searched websites of competitors. We sent emails to them as well inquiring about their prices. No luck. I’d like to say we were surprised. But that wouldn’t be true at all. We knew what we were in for.
That’s why you can’t just google “hair transplant cost in LA” and get a number of quotes within minutes. Most clinics will respond to your question of their rates in an attempt to set you up with an in-person or video consultation. At first, you may think that they just want to “sell” you their procedure, but you will only be half right. In fact, there’s more to it than that.
How Do Clinics Figure Hair Transplant Costs in LA?
Hair transplants are not generally like other plastic surgeries. They are extraordinarily labor-intensive procedures. Each graft which only normally consists of 1-4 follicles (known as follicular units) must be carefully extracted, processed, and re-implanted. One at a time. If a follicle is incorrectly extracted or implanted, then the follicle will die before it has a chance to grow into new hair. A standard hair transplant surgery could take up to 8 hours depending on the amount of hair that needs to be transplanted.
How Much Hair Have You Lost?
Now if every scalp was the same and every hair type was the same, it would be easy to say “$7 per graft and you have yourself a deal.” Unfortunately, it’s more complicated than that. After all, you could put that on your website as we do here at Best Hair Transplant. However, we still need to know what type of hair loss a patient is dealing with. Where they are at this point. What types of balding or thinning they are experiencing. After all, a 25-year-old patient who is just being to experience a receding hairline will need fewer grafts than someone in their 40s who has let the problem progress for years.
Also, depending on whether you want an FUE or a FUT hair transplant will also have a bearing on the price tag. The FUT procedure, also known as “Strip harvesting,” is much easier to perform than an FUE procedure, where the individual follicles are extracted and implanted. However, this once again comes down to the state of your hair loss. You may benefit more from FUE. On the other hand, FUT may be the best answer. Furthermore, if your hair loss is extensive enough, it could be best to perform one of each procedure to get the results you’re looking for. Of course, the costs will vary depending on your needs.
What Doctor & Clinic Will You Choose?
Another factor that greatly impacts hair transplant costs in LA is the surgeon themselves and the transplant clinic you choose. The survivability of the transplanted hair has quite a bit to do with the experience and expertise of the surgeon performing the operation. And depending on where you go, you could end up with a doctor who knows little about the procedure. You could even end up with a robot doing all the work.
Consider this example. Say you want to have some landscaping done in your yard. You have the option to hire a licensed & registered professional company with their fancy trucks and logos to come out and do the job. On the other hand you can hire a day laborer, handyman, or pick up a few fellows holding those cardboard signs offering their hard work for food. Now, don’t get us wrong, we are all for supporting the homeless but if you want a good professional job done, you need to hire a talented and experienced professional to do the job.
Another factor that will greatly affect the hair transplant costs in LA is how much competition is in the area. If there isn’t another hair transplant facility close by, then the clinic that does operate there can pretty much charge whatever they want. That’s one of the reasons it’s great to get your hair transplant in the greater LA area. Getting a hair transplant in Redondo Beach, CA is a great example.
The Best General Guideline for Hair Transplant Costs in LA.
That being said, we can impart a general idea of what a hair transplant in LA is going to cost you at other hair restoration clinics. After all, we did the research. Well, as much as we could without going in for a consultation.
Dermatology & Hair Restoration
Doctor Behnam at Dermatology & Hair Restoration offers a deal stating he will charge $6.30 per graft for the first 1,500 grafts. Then, the price decreases to $6.10 per graft after. This sounds like a wonderful deal until you consider that the average hair transplant consists of 3,000-4,000 grafts or more to complete. And keep in mind, you may need more than 1.
LA FUE Hair Clinic
L.A. FUE Hair Clinic offers a price of $6 to $7 per graft. However, they have a different “level” of transplants. They say their “Executive” procedure costs $12 per graft and their “VIP” procedure costs $18 per graft. They don’t go into any detail as to what “Executive” or “VIP” means but it seems like you may want to stay away from their standard $6 to $7 per graft hair transplants. After all, if there are different tiers of transplants, it stands to reason that you’ll be getting the lower grade version if you pay $6-$7 at LA FUE Hair Clinic.
La Jolla Hair Restoration
The La Jolla Hair Restoration Clinics actually is nice enough to do the math for you. They offer to do the first 1200 grafts cost $6800. But then from 1201 grafts to 2500 grafts, it’s $3 more per graft and from 2501+ grafts it’s an additional $2 per graft. That equals only an affordable $5.60 per graft if you only need a tiny hair transplant but the prices skyrocket after that. And coming from a team with nearly 20 years of experience, we can tell you that it’s EXTREMELY RARE for a patient to need such a low number of transplants.
1200 grafts might be enough to cover small bald areas. Possibly from a young patient who’s only experienced hair loss for a year or so. They could also have a small area that’s thinning and maybe they just want to thicken it up a bit. However, the reality is that most patients we see need at least 2000-2500 to truly cover a balding scalp. Some need much more. Again, that’s on a patient-by-patient basis.
All said and done, you are looking at a price range of $4,000-$5000 to fill in a small thinning area. For true hair transplants that will cover large balding or thinning sections of the scalp, expect to pay about $17,500-$25,000 at most hair transplant clinics in LA. Yup, sorry to break it to you. It’s VERY expensive.
