These include scalp hair transplants, as well as facial hair transplants – a favorite of our transgender hair transplant patients.

Transgender Women Hair Transplants

Hair is important for everyone. We get that and it’s why we do what we do. But for women, hair is a huge part of who they are. And for anyone who’s transitioning from male to female, it may be a goal of yours to have that long, flowing hair that screams “femininity”. I know that my transgender friends have always made long hair a big part of that transitional image. It’s one of those features, much like breasts, that are a mostly female-defining trait. And so having the ability to grow long hair is of the utmost importance.

However, this can be tough for anyone who previously experienced male pattern baldness. After all, balding is extremely common for men. Therefore, if you don’t catch it in time, you’re going to have an uphill battler. But we know you’re up for the challenge. And we’re going to help you make your outside match your inside.

Even if you consider yourself more non-binary or queer than either specifically male or female, you may be leaning more towards having particular features. Or at least choosing to have the option to express yourself in a certain way at different times. Hair transplants can really help you out with this option, just like they can for anyone who’s suffering from hair loss.

Hormone Therapy

Now you may be in luck! Transgender women who have undergone hormone therapy will often find that if they were previously experiencing pattern baldness that estrogen hormone therapy halts its progress. This can be very beneficial for the longevity of any transplanted follicle grafts in the future. This is great news for anyone who’s experienced hair loss so if you’ve seen your hair loss slow down since beginning hormone therapy, then you’re already one step ahead of the game.

For other transgender women who have opted out of hormone therapy, you may be experiencing excess hair. For the removal of excess hair, this is best left up to a hair removal surgeon who may use lasers to permanently destroy follicles and leave you with that clean, silky look you’re going for. We do not perform hair removal surgery at Best Hair Transplant. However, we can recommend some great doctors who specialize in these procedures.

When it comes to hair transplants, the doctor may include Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) or Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) in your treatment plan. Both may be necessary as well. This all depends on the extensivity of your hair loss, how long you waited to begin hormone therapy, or if you choose to receive hormone therapy at all. These are beneficial for our trans women clients who wish to correct thinning hair, bald patches, receding hairlines, excessively high hairlines, or those who wish to alter the hairline around the face to give it a more feminine appearance. If you’re looking to grow out long, classically feminine hair, hair transplants are a great option to ensure your scalp is full and ready for the journey ahead.

Transgender Men Hair Transplants

For transgender men, hormone replacement therapy involves increasing testosterone levels, including dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT’s role in hair loss is complicated for trans men. While trans men can take finasteride/Propecia to counter DHT’s tendency to contribute to hair loss, this can interfere with their hormone balance and discourage the growth of facial hair. It can also trigger the return of their menstrual cycle, which can be very distressing and even trigger further gender dysphoria.

Some trans men find success using minoxidil, also known as Rogaine. This is a topical treatment that can be used as a serum or foam. Some advantages of minoxidil are that it has been shown to work by increasing blood flow to the hair follicles, and it will not impact hormone balance. However, minoxidil tends to be most effective for slowing or stopping further hair loss. It does not necessarily reverse an existing condition.

Now typically, when it comes to our experience with transgender male patients, they are usually looking to have shorter hairstyles. Not everyone but most. We feel it’s just part of the process. When transitioning, you may have imagined yourself more like your male peers. Short hair, beard, mustache… you know the drill better than most. Many of our patients are trying to distance themselves as far from their previous gender as possible. Oftentimes, this involves flipping from one extreme to the other. It’s very common and it makes complete sense.

As a result, we find that most transgender men find FUE is the best option for them. This is because FUT will leave a thin linear scar (as a portion of the scalp is actually removed). Therefore, anyone wishing to wear their hair short will find FUT procedures to be best for them. However, depending on your current hair situation, both FUE and FUT may be recommended. Hair restoration using FUE or FUT procedures can address any hair loss issues without any hormone disruption.

Facial Hair Transplants

Finally, and this is a big one, is facial hair transplants. And we definitely see the vast majority of transgender male patients opting for these procedures. After all, as we noted above, facial hair is one of those male traits that just exude masculinity. It can be easier to grow hair where it’s used to growing or filling in patchy spots. However, it’s not as easy for some trans men to grow facial hair. Hormones help without a doubt. But even after hair starts to sprout, you may feel like you’re going through puberty 2.0 and your facial hair may be a bit sad-looking. Luckily there are options!

For this procedure, we usually employ the FUE procedure and simply transplant the grafts around the face in whatever style the patient is looking for. Beard, goatee, mustache, all of the above. That’s all up to you and how you want to shape your new identity. However, the best strategy will ultimately depend on the desired end result. Scheduling a free consultation is the best way to assess which treatments are best for you.

Other Options

In addition to our surgical treatments, we also offer Low-Level Laser Therapy with Capillus RX 312 laser caps. These have been clinically shown to improve hair growth and increase the thickness of hair, so long as the hair follicles are still viable. This can be used by itself for in-home treatments by itself, or it can be used to support the growth of your newly transplanted hair after surgery. This treatment has a lot of benefits as it has no known risks, is completely pain-free, and only requires 6 minutes a day for use.

Additionally, the Capillus lasercap is a great option to add to your hair transplant procedure. At least in regards to your scalp. Utilizing both LLLT and hair transplants will boost your body’s ability to regrow lost hair and thicken newly transplanted hair.
