Are You Suffering From Thinning or Patchy Facial Hair?

October 23, 2020

Are you suffering from thinning or patchy facial hair? You’re not alone. And ya, it sucks… we know. For many men, facial hair is a symbol of masculinity. Much like women associate breast size with femininity, facial hair is part of what makes you feel manly.

Growing a beard or mustache is a big part of a man’s look. And while some men enjoy a clean-shaven look, the reality is that it’s not for everyone. And much like being bald, having thin or patchy facial hair can emasculate you. Beard and mustache stubble won’t always grow uniformly on your face. Consequently, you may be plagued with patchy facial hair instead of a stylish beard. At best, you may feel like you can’t pull off certain looks. At worst, it drastically affects your self-esteem. Luckily, there’s a way to regrow your thin or patchy facial hair.

A Solution for Patchy Facial Hair

If you’re tired of looking like a budding teenager, it may be time to consider a facial hair transplant. If you have a patchy beard or mustache, a facial hair transplant can be the answer to your problems. But what exactly is a facial hair transplant and how do they work? And will they work for me? There’s a damn good chance they will!

A facial hair transplant is a type of hair transplant that extracts healthy hair follicles from a donor area on your own body and implants them into patchy or balding areas on the face. Much like a standard hair transplant, hairs are frequently extracted from the back of the head where hair loss is less common. Therefore, this area will not suffer from increased balding like the top of the head may.

Understanding Beard Transplants

Types of Facial Hair Transplants

There are two types of facial hair transplants that can help solve thinning or patchy facial hair. The same methods are used for patients suffering from common male pattern baldness.

  • Follicular unit extraction (FUE) – This approach is done by harvesting complete follicular units one at a time from the donor area. This procedure is the least painful of the two options. However, neither is particularly pain-intensive. Either way, this is the most common option and the most widely performed method to repair patchy facial hair.
  • Follicular unit transplantation (FUT) – The other approach is a little bit different. With a FUT procedure, your surgeon cuts a small strip of tissue from the back of the head. Then, the hair follicles bundles are cut in small bunches from the tissue and the head is stitched back up. Due to the removal of skin, this procedure does demand a bit more healing time. However, it is usually less expensive than FUE.

Which Facial Hair Transplant Method is Best for Me?

Ultimately, this is a question best left to your hair transplant doctor. There are many factors that can play into the final decision. These depend on the severity of your condition, genetics, hormone levels, etc. No one technique is right for everyone. However, there are some things you can consider before you speak to your doctor about a facial hair transplant

Both FUE and FUT require anywhere from 2,000 to 5,000 hair follicle grafts. Of course, this will all depend on the severity of your hair thinning, patchiness, or baldness. If you desire to have a fuller thicker beard, you may need more. If you’re looking to just fill in a small section of a mustache, you can expect it to be on the lower end. Again, the hairs are normally extracted from the back of the head. However, in rare circumstances, chest hair may be used. This may be due to the type and shape of your facial hair. Additionally, it could be necessary if you don’t have an adequate amount of hair on your head to transplant.

Finally, some patients may not be a good candidate for a facial hair transplant. For various reasons, these procedures may not be for you. That’s not the case for most of our patients. However, it is a possibility. In that case, it may be best to seek out other doctor-recommended hair replacement options. Ultimately, these decisions and more can be made during your free consultation with our hair transplant physician.
